NCAA Appeals Ruling That Restored Brendan Sorsby's Eligibility
The NCAA appealed a ruling that restored Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby's eligibility and asked a court to stay the injunction before the 2026 season. The Big 12 also sued Texas Tech over potential sanctions if Sorsby plays.
thesouthafrican.comThe NCAA filed a formal appeal Monday of the ruling that granted Brendan Sorsby a temporary injunction restoring his NCAA eligibility. The filing seeks a stay of the injunction and an expedited briefing schedule to resolve the appeal before the 2026 college football season begins. The NCAA stated that each day the order remains in effect compounds harm to its operations.
"Every day this injunction remains in effect, the harm compounds: the NCAA’s governance authority erodes, copycat litigation becomes more likely, and the integrity of every contest in which an ineligible athlete competes is called into question," the NCAA said.
"A stay halts this harm," the NCAA added. Also on Monday, the Big 12 sued Texas Tech for the right to sanction the school if Sorsby plays in any games.
Pete Thamel of ESPN reported the NCAA’s appeal filing. Sorsby has until June 22 to apply for the NFL’s supplemental draft. If he does not apply and the NCAA wins its appeal before the season starts, he would have no college or professional eligibility for 2026.
