Netflix released a special edition of the first season of Stranger Things formatted to resemble a VHS tape recording. Engadget reported that the version presents the episodes in a 4:3 aspect ratio, producing black bars on modern screens, along with a grainy and softly blurred image.
" The Duffer brothers, creators of the series, said the edition matches how the show would appear if it existed in the fictional town of Hawkins and sat on a shelf at Family Video, including the use of pan-and-scan editing.
That technique crops wide images to fit narrower screens by trimming the sides and panning when necessary. Netflix also altered its opening animation to appear dated for the edition. The Duffer brothers indicated they might produce similar versions for later seasons if sufficient viewers watch the first one.
