Newborn Delivered on Street After Venezuela Quakes

A baby boy was born on a street next to a collapsed building in the coastal city of La Guaira after two earthquakes hit Venezuela's northern coast. Video footage showed a woman identified as Dr. María Fernanda Terán assisting with the delivery while the mother lay on the pavement. The mother had been rescued from a collapsed building and taken to a safety zone, where she went into labor.

Local reports indicate both mother and child are doing well. A male bystander supported the upper half of the newborn's body during the delivery, and another person later provided additional covering. Dr. Terán posted on social media that delivering the baby during the shaking was the greatest challenge of her life.

Venezuelans responded with messages of support, including comments describing the birth as a sign of hope amid the destruction.

m. local time, followed 39 seconds later by a 7.5-magnitude quake. The tremors damaged buildings across Caracas and 15 other cities. National Assembly leader Jorge Rodríguez stated on Friday that the earthquakes killed more than 900 people and injured more than 3,000.

He added that close to 3,000 people lost their homes and at least 1,400 buildings were damaged, including 13 hospitals and 25 commercial facilities.
