Nigel Farage resigned as the Member of Parliament for Clacton on July 7, 2026. In a live statement he said the decision would force a by-election expected to occur in short order. Farage stated that he had considered other options before concluding that he should not allow media scrutiny to determine his future.
"I could go out and try and make some real big money. I could go to the USA where I’ve got plenty of offers," he said. "And then I thought, why should I be judged today or in the future by Sky News or the media?
He added that he had reached the decision after careful thought. "I’ve thought about it hard and I’ve decided about it today, today I will resign as a Member of Parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, thereby forcing a by-election which would happen I hope in short order," Farage said. Farage won the Clacton seat with an 8,405 majority in the 2024 general election.
He framed the coming by-election as a "people versus the establishment" contest.
