Nigeria's foreign minister stated that the safety of Nigerian nationals in South Africa shows no sign of improvement after two deaths during recent protests. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu announced additional evacuation flights and called for South African authorities to investigate the killings of Musa Yunana Joe and Charles Iroegbu.
Background on the deaths Nigeria's foreign ministry said Joe was killed in front of his shop in eMalahleni on June 28 by unidentified criminals. The ministry added that Iroegbu died during police questioning in Pretoria the same day. South African police stated that Joe's death did not appear connected to the protests and offered no immediate comment on Iroegbu's death.
" South African foreign ministry spokesman Chrispin Phiri said the government had asked Nigeria's High Commission to provide information for a formal investigation. Weeks of marches against undocumented migrants have taken place across South Africa, with some residents blaming foreign workers for job losses and pressure on public services.
Hundreds of Nigerians have already departed the country.
