North Atlantic Right Whale Calf Count Reaches 23 in 2026 Season
Researchers recorded 23 North Atlantic right whale calves this year, the highest number since 2009. The New England Aquarium maintains a catalog of more than 800 individual whales dating to 1935.
bbc.co.ukResearchers at the New England Aquarium documented 23 North Atlantic right whale calves during the most recent calving season. The count is the fourth-highest on record and the highest since 2009. Amy Warren, scientific program officer at the New England Aquarium, said the increase follows several years of low reproduction.
She noted that healthy females typically give birth every three to four years, while some had waited up to ten years between calves in the prior decade.
The aquarium manages the North Atlantic Right Whale Identification Catalog, which contains more than 800 individuals and receives 3,000 to 5,000 sightings annually. Each whale is identified by unique white callosities on its head formed by collections of whale lice.
Warren stated that the current population is estimated at under 400 animals. Historical records indicate the population may have fallen to between 20 and 50 individuals by the time international whaling protections were enacted in 1932.
Commercial whaling ended in 1932.
Since then, vessel strikes, fishing gear entanglement, and shifts in prey distribution linked to changing ocean conditions have increased mortality and reduced birth rates. Warren said one successful calving season does not reverse long-term population decline. Sustained high calf counts and reduced human-caused deaths would be required for recovery.
