A North Carolina resident named Austin told The Ramsey Show that he and his wife are attempting to build a $1,000 emergency fund and eliminate debt while carrying an $880 monthly payment on a Chevrolet Silverado. Austin said the truck loan balance stands at nearly $40,000, while the vehicle is worth about $33,000. He purchased the Silverado after the car he used for work failed.

Kamel asked what factors led to the purchase and noted that Austin earns roughly $65,000 annually. Kamel stated he does not drive a vehicle of that value. Co-host Jade Warshaw asked whether the household could operate with one vehicle, noting that Austin's wife stays home with their three children and drives a Ford Explorer. Warshaw said she and her husband shared one car for ten years.

Austin later stated the family's total debt, including the truck, credit cards, and medical bills, is about $55,000. Kamel said the household could either pay the roughly $7,000 difference between the loan balance and the truck's value or finance a lower-cost replacement vehicle.
