North Carolina Pickle Vendor Withdraws from DC Fair over Video with Confederate Flag

Mt Olive Pickle Company withdrew from the Great American State Fair in Washington DC after North Carolina’s booth showed a video containing a Confederate flag. The company, based in eastern North Carolina, told local station WNCT it had been unaware the flag would appear in the state’s exhibit.
The firm said it had accepted the invitation to represent North Carolina as part of the U.S. semiquincentennial. It added that its participation was based on the exhibit as presented and that the company stands on values of human dignity, opportunity, and freedom.
A vehicle manufacturer that also took part in the North Carolina booth said the video ran 45 minutes and was produced by a third-party creator for YouTube. The manufacturer stated it did not create, produce, edit, approve, or select the video, and the segment showing the flag lasted only a few seconds.
The video was removed from the booth after the footage circulated in news reports and on social media. North Carolina did not fly the Confederate battle flag while it was part of the Confederacy, according to The News & Observer.
The fair is a 16-day event tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary.
At least seven Democratic-governed states declined to send delegations, citing budget or scheduling issues. North Carolina had also cited budget constraints but was represented after state companies provided financing. m. due to heat.
