Notion Launches Developer Platform for Custom AI Agents and External Data Integration
Notion introduced a new developer platform on Wednesday that extends its Custom Agents launched in February, adds Workers for running custom code, and enables connections with external AI agents and databases. Customers have built more than one million agents since February. The platform is available on Business and Enterprise plans via the Notion CLI.
Notion announced a developer platform that adds external data connectivity, custom code execution, and workflow capabilities to its recently launched Custom AI agents.
Notion says customers have created more than one million custom agents since the feature launched in February. Notion's previous Custom Agents could not connect with external data or use custom logic. External agents previously had no way to connect with the Notion workspace.
Ivan Zhao, Notion co-founder and CEO, said during the livestream: “It’s true that, historically, Notion hasn’t been the most developer-focused platform. ” Notion launched Workers, a cloud-based environment for running custom code in a secure sandbox. Workers allow customers to sync their data into Notion, build custom tools, and trigger work with webhooks without needing external infrastructure.
Workers use the same credit system as Custom Agents. Notion is making Workers free through August. Notion's database sync feature, powered by Workers, can pull in data from any database with an API including Salesforce, Zendesk, and Postgres.
Workers can build agent tools with custom logic when connecting via MCP (Model Context Protocol) is insufficient. The new platform allows users to chat directly with external AI agents, assign them work, and track their progress. At launch, Notion supports Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Decagon as partner agents.
Notion launched an External Agent API for connecting internal agents to Notion. Developers and agents interact with Notion's new Developer Platform via the Notion CLI. The Notion CLI is available on the company's Business and Enterprise Plans.
TechCrunch reported that by building an orchestration layer, Notion is positioning itself as a hub where people and agents can collaborate across tools and databases. The company pointed out that preferred AI coding agents can write the code for Workers. Syncing external data sources is also a part of the Notion Developer Platform, keeping data current within Notion databases.
