Nottingham Inquiry Concludes After Examining Authorities' Handling of Attacker Valdo Calocane

A 14-week public inquiry into the June 2023 Nottingham attacks concluded on Friday after examining how authorities handled Valdo Calocane in the years before he killed three people and injured three others. The inquiry, whose hearings began on 23 February, heard from 164 witnesses and reviewed interactions between Calocane and multiple agencies dating back to 2020.

Calocane had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia that year.

On the morning of 13 June 2023, Calocane stabbed to death Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates in Nottingham and tried to kill Wayne Birkett, Sharon Miller and Marcin Gawronski. He later pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and three counts of attempted murder. He is serving an indefinite hospital order.

At a press conference in London on Monday, the victims' families said the inquiry had exposed avoidable lapses. " She added: "This wasn't bad luck. It was a catastrophic collapse of responsibility. " James Coates, son of Ian Coates, said the families had believed institutions would deliver justice.

"For two and a half years, we've watched organisations close ranks, mark their own homework, and the inquiry must be the true reckoning," he said. David Webber, Barnaby's father, said he could not reach the end of his life without seeing change. "We're fighting on to do what's right for our loved ones," he said.

Lee Coates, another son of Ian Coates, pointed to earlier missed opportunities. "I think if people did their jobs properly back in 2020, we wouldn't be sat here now," he said. The inquiry documented several specific failures.
