NYC Issues Flash Flood Alerts Through Monday Night

New York City officials issued urgent alerts Sunday warning residents of potentially life-threatening flash flooding through Monday night. NYC Emergency Management and Notify NYC told residents to prepare for intense rainfall and to move to higher ground if water enters their buildings. Notify NYC posted on X that heavy rain from July 5 through July 7 could cause rapid basement flooding.

The agency advised people to stay out of flooded basements and to avoid unnecessary travel during downpours. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards posted that the city is monitoring incoming heavy rain and urged residents in basement apartments or flood-prone streets to make a plan.

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch for New York City, Long Island, northeastern New Jersey, and southern Connecticut through late Monday night.

Forecasters expect multiple rounds of heavy showers that could produce 2 to 4 inches of rain across the region, with locally higher amounts possible. Meteorologists said hourly rainfall rates could reach 2 inches during the most intense storms. A stalled frontal boundary combined with abundant atmospheric moisture is driving the prolonged threat, with the highest risk centered over the New York City metro area and western Long Island, according to the weather service's New York office.

The warnings come less than a year after an October 30, 2025 storm killed two men in flooded basements. A 39-year-old man died in Brooklyn after attempting to rescue his dog, and a 43-year-old man was found dead in a Manhattan basement boiler room. Hurricane Ida in 2021 caused 11 similar deaths across the city.

Emergency officials urged residents in basement apartments to evacuate to a higher floor immediately if water begins entering their building. Authorities also advised residents not to walk, swim, or drive through flooded roadways, to clear leaves and debris from street catch basins when safe, and to report severely clogged storm drains to the city's 311 system.

Notify NYC encouraged residents, especially those in low-lying neighborhoods, to enroll in emergency alert systems.

City officials stated that early action saves lives and warned residents never to wait until water is already rising to seek higher ground. The storm system is expected to continue threatening the metropolitan region through Monday night.
