In 20 games he recorded one goal and four points while averaging 20 minutes and 26 seconds of ice time on the second defensive pairing with Darnell Nurse under coach Kris Knoblauch.
The 33-year-old native of Dublin, Ohio, has played 14 NHL seasons. He was selected 20th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2011 draft and has represented the United States at the world championships five times. Murphy's prior contract carried a $4.4 million salary-cap hit.
He will enter next season needing two more goals to reach 50 for his NHL career. He has reached the 80-game mark twice, including last season, when he played in 60 games before the trade.
