Oklahoma women's gymnastics won its eighth NCAA team title in April 2026, defeating LSU in the final at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Recruiting Approach K.J.

Kindler, head coach at the University of Oklahoma, described her recruiting style as candid and focused on substance rather than presentation. She stated that recruits are told they come to Norman to win and that the program discusses athletes' mentality and championship goals.

Kindler said the eight titles displayed in the team's facility provide an edge only if athletes want that environment. She noted the program has maintained high retention alongside its championship results.

Kindler said the staff, including associate head coaches Lou Ball and Tom Haley, works on athletes' mental, physical, and technical skills. She credited former Alabama coach Sarah Patterson for an execution-focused approach and cited Valorie Kondos Field, Greg Marsden, Suzanne Yoculan, and Mary Jane Olson as additional influences.

Kindler also named her former college coach, Amy Pyle, as her primary inspiration for allowing athletes to learn through mistakes.

After the 2024 team posted the highest score in NCAA history during the regular season, it was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA semifinals following errors on multiple vaults. Kindler said the staff and athletes learned more that year than in any of the prior ten seasons.

The program won consecutive NCAA titles in 2025 and 2026. Kindler said she allowed leadership to develop naturally on the 2026 squad rather than directing it.

Kindler said each year's seniors are responsible for preserving the program's culture and integrating new team members. She stated that every roster begins the season with the goal of winning a national title.
