Oklahoma Woman Faces Repeated Hospitalizations After Forehead Lump

Emma Selvidge, a 19-year-old from Oklahoma, woke at 3 a.m. on April 2 with a lump on her forehead that she initially assumed was a bug bite. She went to urgent care that morning, where doctors treated the lump as a possible spider bite and gave her a shot plus antibiotics.

Within about 10 minutes the swelling worsened and spread into her eye. Selvidge went to work that day but later sought emergency care after she began losing vision. Staff there ordered a CT scan, treated her for possible MRSA, and performed surgery to drain an abscess.

Doctors also identified an unrelated tonsil condition during the procedure that will likely require a tonsillectomy. Selvidge was discharged on April 5. About one month later the swelling returned and caused severe sinus infections and constant headaches.

Two weeks after the second hospital stay the swelling recurred a third time. By then scans showed mild stenosis of the right transverse sinus and narrowing in one of the main veins draining blood from the brain. Selvidge is now taking sinus medication and continues to experience daily headaches, a sore throat, and ongoing vision complications.
