OpenAI Tech Talk Show TBPN Shifts Emmy Entry to Outstanding Variety Series
The three-hour daily program will now compete in the talk-show track against late-night series. The change follows consultation with the Television Academy and reverses an earlier plan to enter in the emerging-media category.

OpenAI-owned talk show “TBPN” will submit for the outstanding variety series category at the 78th Emmy Awards instead of the emerging-media category, Variety reported June 8. The program had announced an emerging-media entry in April after OpenAI acquired it in March. Billboards and outreach to the Television Academy’s emerging-media peer group supported that plan.
“TBPN” launched as a weekly livestream in late 2024, moved to a daily format in January 2025, and maintains a staff of 11. Recent guests have included Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, Satya Nadella, Mark Cuban, Marc Andreessen, James Cameron, and Ken Burns. Nominations-round voting opens June 11 and closes June 22; Emmy nominations are scheduled for announcement July 8.
