The San Diego Padres placed their catcher on the seven-day concussion injured list after he was struck in the head by a warmup pitch. The team selected another catcher from Triple-A to fill the roster spot.
mlbtraderumors.comFermin was behind the plate when a reliever bounced a throw in the dirt before the bottom of the sixth inning. The ball hit Fermin on the side of the head, forcing him to leave the game.
It was not the first time Fermin had been struck in the head this season. Manager Craig Stammen said Saturday that the cumulative effect of those incidents led to the decision to place him on the concussion list. "He's had a few head shots here over the course of this season so far, and [that was] just another one," Stammen said.
The Padres selected the contract of a catcher from Triple-A El Paso. To make room on the 40-man roster, a pitcher was designated for assignment. Another catcher started behind the plate for San Diego in Sunday's series finale.
