Patriots, Second-Round Pick Gabe Jacas Remain Unsigned Over Medical Questions
Medical concerns have delayed a contract between the New England Patriots and second-round outside linebacker Gabe Jacas. The 21-year-old has missed team activities since May while recovering from a knee procedure.
yardbarker.comMedical questions are holding up a contract between the New England Patriots and second-round outside linebacker Gabe Jacas, their only remaining unsigned draft pick, according to ESPN reporter Mike Reiss. Reiss reported that Jacas underwent a knee "clean-up" procedure and has been away from the team since May. He missed rookie minicamp and the mandatory minicamp last week.
Reiss said two sources from other teams told him Jacas passed a physical exam but had a labral tear in his shoulder and a stress fracture in his foot that could require future attention. It is unclear whether the knee issue occurred after his NFL Combine physical or during his April visit with the Patriots.
Reiss added that Jacas is expected to be healthy for training camp. The absence of a standard participation agreement, which most draft picks receive, has kept him away from the team.
A high-ranking NFL executive told Reiss the Patriots may be seeking financial protections in the contract tied to the medical procedure. Jacas is projected to sign a four-year deal worth $8.657 million that includes a $2.756 million signing bonus. Patriots outside linebackers coach Mike Smith said the missed time could leave Jacas behind but that the staff would adjust its approach to prepare him.
Jacas, a three-star recruit from Port St. Lucie, Florida, played four seasons at Illinois, recording 183 tackles, 35.5 tackles for loss and 27 sacks. The Patriots selected him with the 55th overall pick in the 2026 draft.
