Peru's highest election authority proclaimed Keiko Fujimori president-elect on July 3. Election chief Roberto Burneo stated at a ceremony in Lima that Fujimori and Luis Fernando Galarreta Velarde would serve as president and first vice president. Fujimori received 50.135 percent of the vote to Roberto Sanchez's 49.865 percent.
The margin amounted to 49,641 votes out of roughly 18 million cast. She will succeed interim leader Jose Maria Balcazar on July 28 and govern until 2031. Fujimori, 51, is the daughter of Alberto Fujimori, who ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000.
In a post on X after the proclamation she wrote, "A new chapter begins. " Sanchez alleged irregularities in the count. Election authorities rejected his request to annul the results. He is now challenging the outcome at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
Regional leaders including Argentina's Javier Milei and Chile's Jose Antonio Kast offered congratulations. " U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Trump Administration looks forward to deepening collaboration on security, investment and trade.
Moody's said the result should boost investor confidence and support mining projects.
