Peter Magyar secured a supermajority in Hungary's National Assembly, defeating Viktor Orbán after his 16 years in power. Magyar has outlined plans to address issues in media independence and rule of law. European Union officials are discussing the release of frozen funds following the election outcome.
pravdareport.comHungary's prime minister-elect, Peter Magyar, won a landslide victory in last weekend's election, securing 137 of the 199 seats in the National Assembly. This supermajority provides him with the two-thirds majority needed to amend the constitution under Hungary's Fundamental Law.

Magyar has stated intentions to reform aspects of the government established during Viktor Orbán's tenure, including media and judicial independence. This week, after meeting with the country's president, Magyar demanded the president's resignation, describing the figure as unworthy and unfit.
He also posted a video of the encounter, noting Orbán's presence on a nearby balcony. Magyar announced plans to suspend state media operations until their independence can be ensured, referring to them as a factory of lies.
During Orbán's 16 years in power across five administrations, his government amended the constitution and passed laws that reduced the independence of the judiciary and media. It placed allies in nonpolitical government positions. For example, a prosecutor general was appointed last June for a nine-year term, which the European Commission noted could allow senior prosecutors to influence subordinates without sufficient checks.
Orbán maintained alliances with the United States under President Donald Trump and with Russia under President Vladimir Putin. Vice President JD Vance visited Hungary before the election, and Trump spoke with Orbán by phone, describing him as a fantastic man.
