In his statement, Obi clarified that his departure was not due to any personal grievances with former Senate President David Mark or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He stated that he continues to respect both David Mark and Atiku Abubakar.
Obi pointed to a pattern of internal division, legal disputes, and infiltration of destabilising forces as factors in his decision. He stated that the challenges in the African Democratic Congress are similar to those he previously encountered in the Labour Party.
Despite leaving the party, Obi reaffirmed his primary concern remains the welfare of citizens, particularly issues of insecurity, poverty, and displacement.
