Peter Obi Calls for President Tinubu to Resign Over Oyo School Abduction

Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, called on President Bola Tinubu to resign or refrain from seeking re-election, citing the handling of insecurity in the country. Obi stated on his verified X account on Monday that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State told him the president had not contacted the governor more than 50 days after the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the state.

He visited Makinde on Friday with Nigerian political economist Pat Utomi.

Obi said the lack of contact after more than seven weeks demonstrated "incapacity and a lack of compassion." He added that the government and people of Oyo State "should rightly feel bitter and abandoned." He recalled that former presidents had contacted state governors after similar incidents and noted that about 13 school abductions had occurred under the current administration.

June, Obi made a similar call for resignation over security issues. A presidential spokesperson described the earlier statement as misplaced and said the administration had rescued hundreds of kidnapped victims and neutralized more than 15,000 terrorists through military operations.
