Phillies Re-Sign Catcher Released by Yankees Two Days Earlier

The Philadelphia Phillies have re-signed catcher Payton Henry, according to the official transaction log. The 29-year-old was released by the New York Yankees organization on July 3, 2026, and had previously left the Phillies' minor-league system in free agency.

Henry made his major-league debut with the Miami Marlins in 2021 and has recorded 43 major-league at-bats. He has spent recent seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Phillies organizations, primarily at the Triple-A level.

Henry was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2016.

In 2024, he appeared in 27 games for Triple-A Buffalo before an injury limited him to three months on the injured list. The Phillies have used organizational depth behind the plate in recent seasons. The re-signing adds an experienced option at Triple-A without an immediate effect on the major-league roster.

"For this area, I know it's a big deal when we play each other," Henry said earlier this year while with the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, according to Scott Walsh of Pinstripe Alley.
