yardbarker.comThe Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-8 on June 10 at PNC Park after erasing a five-run deficit in the seventh and eighth innings. Shohei Ohtani pitched the first six innings for the Dodgers and allowed six hits, four runs and three earned runs. He threw 98 mph fastballs that umpire Felix Neon ruled balls on a 3-0 count to Brandon Lowe in the seventh inning.
Catcher Dalton Rushing did not challenge the calls, and the Dodgers had one challenge remaining at that point. Tyler Callihan hit a 427-foot home run off Ohtani for his first career homer. Ryan Ward hit his first career grand slam earlier in the game.
Brandon Lowe followed with a two-run double off Ohtani that ended the pitcher's night. "I usually let the catchers make that determination," Ohtani said. " The Dodgers led by two runs entering the eighth inning.
The Dodgers bullpen allowed a five-run rally that included an error by Max Muncy. Callihan hit a three-run home run and Spencer Horwitz added a two-run home run in the eighth. Ohtani hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth.
The Dodgers entered the game 36-3 when leading after seven innings. This was Ohtani's third time pitching in the seventh inning during the 2026 season. He has a blister on his right hand that is temporarily limiting the number of split-fingered fastballs he throws.
Pirates manager Don Kelly said of Ohtani: "You're not going to face too many guys like that. " Tyler Callihan landed on the injured list with a broken left hand after the game. Jake Mangum reached base on a swinging bunt in the seventh inning, and Callihan singled earlier in that frame.
