A starting pitcher has extended a scoreless streak to 44 2/3 innings, the longest such run by any pitcher this season. The pitcher went 4-0 in May while striking out 45 batters and issuing three walks across 39 innings. During that span the pitcher also broke a franchise record set in 1911.

Contract and background The pitcher signed a six-year, $104 million guaranteed contract in March that runs through 2032 and includes $20 million in deferred money. The deal followed a 2025 season in which the pitcher finished second in voting for the league's top pitching award after posting a 2.50 earned-run average.

The pitcher was acquired by the current team in a 2019 trade and has started every opening-day game since joining the rotation.

Path to the record The current streak began after the pitcher allowed two runs on April 30. Five consecutive starts of at least seven scoreless innings followed. To surpass the major-league record of 59 consecutive scoreless innings, the pitcher must record at least seven scoreless innings in each of the next two starts plus one additional inning.

The previous record holder said the streak reflects repeating mechanics, changing speeds, and generating weak contact.
