Several youths were arrested by plainclothes police officers along Harambee Avenue in Nairobi on Tuesday morning after they attempted to gather near the Office of the President during Saba Saba commemorations, AllAfrica reported. The group was intercepted by non-uniformed officers near Harambee House and the neighboring Jogoo House before they could assemble.
Officers subdued the youths and escorted them into a waiting Subaru vehicle.
Multi-agency security teams maintained an extensive operation across Nairobi on 7 July 2026. Parliament remained cordoned off, with checkpoints on major roads leading into the Central Business District. Police deployed anti-riot officers, water cannons and razor-wire barricades around key government installations.
Commuters and motorists underwent security screening at strategic entry points. The National Police Service had announced enhanced checkpoints across Nairobi on Monday 6 July 2026. Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud stated there will be restricted areas like Parliament and people will be allowed in after screening.
He warned that authorities had not sanctioned the planned demonstrations and unlawful gatherings would be dealt with in accordance with the law. The Matatu Owners Association stated that security checks disrupted public transport operations, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
