Poland Seeks Answers on Canceled U.S. Troop Deployment
Polish officials said they will ask the Trump administration why the Pentagon canceled the planned deployment of more than 4,000 U.S. Army troops to Poland. The decision reduces American military levels in Europe to near pre-2022 levels.
Washington ExaminerPolish officials said questions remain about why the Pentagon canceled the deployment of more than 4,000 U.S. Army troops to Poland. The move reduces American military levels in Europe to near pre-2022 levels. In an interview published Tuesday, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Zalewski said he plans to press the Trump administration on the cancellation.
The unit involved is the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, which had been preparing for a nine-month rotation as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve.
Background on the Canceled Deployment The U.S. military confirmed last Wednesday that it canceled the deployment of the brigade based at Fort Hood, Texas. The rotation was part of the NATO mission that expanded after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Polish Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the reorganization cannot be made at the cost of the biggest ally of the United States in Europe.
He noted that Poland invests around 15,000 dollars every year for the deployment of each U.S. soldier.
Zalewski said Poland will ask questions and expects answers. He recalled that President Trump had declared the U.S. would maintain its armed forces in Poland and pointed to a September promise that the forces would stay. Polish officials are holding meetings in Washington this week.
Zalewski said the delegation will focus on the future structure of NATO and defense cooperation between the U.S. and Europe. Kosiniak-Kamysz also highlighted Poland's purchases of U.S. weapons, noting that the country has spent more than fifty billion dollars on American military equipment.
