Police Arrest 28-Year-Old Man in Widdecombe Murder Case

Police arrested a 28-year-old white British man in South Yorkshire on suspicion of murdering former UK MP Ann Widdecombe. The arrest was carried out by South Yorkshire Police and Counter Terrorism Policing North East on behalf of Devon and Cornwall Police. The suspect is now in custody.

Officers said there is no information to suggest the killing was terrorism-related or politically motivated. A 26-year-old white British man arrested earlier at an address in Newton Abbot has been released from the investigation. Devon and Cornwall Police Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman previously said the case was moving at a significant pace.

the Death Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday after sustaining serious injuries. Police believe she was attacked there on Wednesday at about 12:30 p.m. She had been due to appear on a Channel 5 television show that afternoon. WhatsApp messages showed she confirmed receipt of a Zoom link at 12:19 p.m. but did not respond to later attempts to contact her.

UK leader Nigel Farage visited her Dartmoor home, named Widdecombe's Rest, on Saturday and laid a wreath. He described her as much more than just a politician. Politicians across parties, including Sir Keir Starmer, Kemi Badenoch and Ed Davey, also paid tribute to Widdecombe, who was first elected to Parliament in 1987.
