The IndependentPolice Scotland has spent more than £2 million on its investigation into the Scottish National Party’s finances. Operation Branchform, opened in 2021, reached £2,173,089 by 30 April, according to figures released under a freedom of information request.
The total excludes pension contributions and Crown Office expenses. Over £100,000 of the cost, specifically £100,498, covered officer overtime. Among those charged in the inquiry is Peter Murrell, former SNP chief executive and husband of Nicola Sturgeon.
He faces allegations of embezzling nearly £460,000 and is due to appear in court on Monday.
Political reaction Scottish Labour criticised the spending.
Justice spokeswoman Pauline McNeill said the investigation adds financial pressure to Police Scotland and called on the SNP to state whether it plans budget cuts for the force. 7 billion for policing in 2026-27, a 5 per cent increase from the previous year.
The spokesperson noted that Scotland has more officers per capita than England and Wales and that the Chief Constable has confirmed the budget will maintain 16,500 officers.
