The poll was released in April 2026. Marion Maréchal, leader of Identité Libertés, commented on the poll results via social media on April 16, 2026, stating that 60% of French people think such a replacement is occurring and noting that rulers are among the 40% who do not.
According to the French Directorate General for Foreigners, valid residence permits in France reached 4.5 million in 2025, marking a 3% increase from previous levels. This rise was driven by multi-year permits and long-term resident cards. One in three permits was issued for family reasons, totaling 1.5 million, while one in five was an automatic renewal.
New permits issued in 2025 totaled 384,000, an 11% increase, partly due to a 65% rise in admissions for humanitarian reasons. Foreigners with legal status represent 8.1% of France's adult population, with a concentration from Maghreb nationalities.
Regularizations of immigrants declined by 10% in 2025, reaching 28,610. Deportations increased by 15.7% to 24,985, the highest level in a decade, as reported by Le Journal du Dimanche. Marion Maréchal posted a video on April 23, 2026, highlighting illegal immigration figures to the European Union from 2008 to 2024. She criticized successive French governments for inaction on the issue.
Maréchal also criticized Spain's regularization of 500,000 undocumented immigrants, a figure some estimate could reach over 1.5 million. She advocated for closing the Schengen border at Spain to deter further immigration and protect French and European interests.
Jordan Bardella of the National Rally has called for changes to EU rules to restrict free movement within the Schengen area for individuals holding resident permits.
