Port St. Lucie Man Receives 15 Years for Fentanyl Trafficking and Firearm Possession

A Port St. Lucie man received a 15-year federal prison sentence on May 7 2026 for attempting to obtain thousands of fentanyl pills through the U.S. mail and for possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Christopher J. Buitrago 34 will serve 180 months in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons followed by five years of supervised release the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced. The court also ordered forfeiture of the seized firearm ammunition drug proceeds and any property traceable to the offense.

Buitrago attempted to import the fentanyl pills from overseas suppliers using the postal system and maintained a loaded firearm alongside cash generated from prior sales the justice department release states. The case forms one prosecution within the broader federal effort to disrupt domestic distribution networks that move fentanyl from international sources into South Florida communities.

The sentence shifts Buitrago from pretrial status to immediate incarceration at a yet-to-be-designated federal facility. It activates standard Bureau of Prisons intake and classification procedures that assign security level based on offense severity criminal history and firearm involvement.

Upon completion of the term Buitrago must report to a probation officer in the Southern District of Florida who will enforce conditions that bar contact with co-conspirators restrict travel and prohibit possession of firearms or controlled substances.
