Portland Fire Builds All Training Around Constraints-Led Approach in First WNBA Season

The Portland Fire, a WNBA expansion team in its first season, structures every practice, rotation pattern and recovery protocol around the Constraints-Led Approach. ESPN reported that first-year head coach Alex Sarama, an expert in the method, has made the approach the foundation of the entire organization.

The Constraints-Led Approach creates specific boundaries during drills so players must adjust on the fly rather than repeat fixed movements.

Sarama said the method sets boundaries that help athletes become more skillful. He added that a bold start and focused player development are required to achieve something special, and that CLA fits those goals. Bridget Carleton, an eighth-year veteran in her first season with Portland, compared the process to solving for an unknown variable in algebra.

She said basketball always has an answer and that CLA helps her find solutions during games. Guard Sarah Ashlee Barker described taking an off-balance three-pointer after an offensive rebound against the New York Liberty, noting she would never have attempted the shot before but now finds it second nature.

ESPN reported that the approach has been used in sports for decades and is more common in European soccer and rugby.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have applied it in recent years, and players including Kelsey Plum of the Los Angeles Sparks and Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs have incorporated elements into their individual training. Two months into the 2026 season the Fire have recorded double-digit wins and sit three games outside a playoff position.

Sarama said the method is intended to make games feel easier than practices by exposing players to varied constraints during drills.
