Portland Fire Uses Constraints-Led Approach in First WNBA Season

The Portland Fire have built their entire operation around the Constraints-Led Approach during the team's first WNBA season. ESPN reported that the method, used in sports for decades, structures every practice, rotation pattern and rest-and-recovery plan with variable rules that force players to adapt in game-like settings.

First-year head coach Alex Sarama, a leading expert in the approach, sets specific boundaries in drills.

"It's a boundary," Sarama said. " Players finish at the rim with restrictions such as keeping the shooting hand below the nose while using two feet, or they take shots while fading, backpedaling or peeling out. Veteran forward Bridget Carleton, in her eighth WNBA season and first with Portland, compared the method to algebra.

"In basketball, there is always an answer," Carleton said. "Maybe there's not just one right answer, but there is an answer. " Guard Sarah Ashlee Barker described the effect after grabbing an offensive rebound and hitting an off-balance three-pointer against the New York Liberty.

"I would never have thought to take that shot before in my life, but all of a sudden it was second nature," Barker told ESPN. '" The approach is more common in European soccer and rugby. The Los Angeles Dodgers have used it in recent years, and players including Kelsey Plum and Victor Wembanyama have incorporated elements into individual training.

Sarama said the method suits an expansion team. "To do something special, you have to make a bold start and make sure players are developing," he said. " Two months into the 2026 season the Fire have secured double-digit wins and sit three games out of a playoff spot.
