President Addresses Communist Threat Ahead of Midterms

The president warned voters during a July 3 speech at Mount Rushmore that a "resurgence of the communist menace in our land" was underway, telling supporters they could choose between being a communist or a patriot. The remarks came days after similar comments on the National Mall, where the president said America would never become a communist country.

The statements followed victories by several Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates and form part of a broader Republican effort to link the group to communism ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Democratic socialism seeks to reduce economic inequality and expand public services such as health care, housing, education, and worker protections through democratic institutions. Supporters generally favor greater regulation or public ownership of major economic sectors while maintaining multiparty elections, civil liberties, and constitutional democracy.

Communism, as developed by Karl Marx and implemented in countries such as the Soviet Union and Cuba, aims to abolish private ownership of the means of production and establish a classless society under centralized planning and one-party rule. Experts told Newsweek that democratic socialists typically embrace a market economy with expanded state intervention, while communists view the party as the sole arbiter of truth.

A Democratic Socialists of America spokesperson responded that the organization supports political pluralism. Sheri Berman, a political science professor at Barnard College, said Republicans conflate the two ideologies to scare voters who have lived under communist regimes.

Marc J. Selverstone, director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia's Miller Center, said socialism has historically been portrayed as a step toward communism, making the label useful for opponents of stronger labor protections and expanded social welfare programs.
