The HillPresident Trump posted congratulations Tuesday night after a Republican senator secured a primary victory with nearly 60 percent of the vote against multiple challengers. The legislation would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo identification to cast a ballot.
The president also called for the Senate parliamentarian to be removed immediately to clear a path for Senate Republicans to advance the measure.
The senator is projected to win the Republican primary with 56.79 percent of the vote, according to Decision Desk HQ. The candidate will face a Democratic pediatrician in the November general election.
Earlier this year the senator drew criticism from some Republicans for supporting increased military pressure on Iran and additional troop deployments. The conflict with Iran has now lasted more than three months. The senator responded to the Tuesday post on social media platform X, thanking the president and reiterating support for firing the Senate parliamentarian to advance the voter eligibility legislation.
