Primary challenges defeat three Democratic incumbents in New York and Colorado

Democratic primary voters defeated three House incumbents last week in New York and Colorado. The winners include former comptroller Brad Lander in New York's 10th district, Darializa Avila Chevalier in the 13th district, and Melat Kiros in Colorado's 1st district.

The three defeated members had previously taken public positions against the current administration. One served as lead counsel in an impeachment proceeding, another managed an impeachment trial in the Senate, and the third faced Republican criticism over past immigration status.

Primary results and candidate records The victories follow two weeks after earlier progressive wins against sitting Democrats. Observers noted that the defeated incumbents held established records of opposition to the current administration. An Economist/YouGov poll found 64 percent of self-identified Democrats support reducing military aid to Israel.

Separate Senate primaries in Michigan and Maine also featured progressive challengers running against incumbents or candidates with prior administration ties.

Other primary outcomes In New York's 12th district, candidate George Conway finished last in a primary focused on opposition to the current administration. In Maryland's 5th district, candidate Adrian Boafo won after receiving support from outside groups.

In Minnesota, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan is campaigning against Rep. Angie Craig partly over past support for administration immigration policies. Voters in several states continue to select nominees ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
