Primary elections are being held today in New York, Maryland, South Carolina and Utah. Voters will decide candidates for several congressional and state office races. In New York, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has backed progressive challengers Brad Lander, the former city comptroller, and democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier in the 10th and 13th congressional districts.
Both challengers have criticized Israel’s conduct in its war with Gaza. They face Democratic incumbents Rep. Dan Goldman and Rep. Adriano Espaillat. President Trump endorsed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette in the South Carolina governor’s race.
Last week he issued a dual endorsement of both Evette and state Attorney General Alan Wilson. In Utah a court-ordered redraw of congressional district lines takes effect for the primaries. In Maryland, state Senate President Bill Ferguson faces his first serious primary challenger in 12 years after refusing to support a redistricting effort.
