The Crime and Corruption Commission chair told a parliamentary committee that an integrity unit proposed after a 2022 domestic-violence inquiry has not been established. More than 2,100 complaints about police officers were received between July 2025 and March 2026.
themandarin.com.auQueensland’s Crime and Corruption Commission chair Bruce Barbour told a parliamentary committee that the police service has not created an integrity unit recommended four years ago. Barbour said the commission has observed a continuing reduction in the quality of how police handle significant matters. He cited inconsistent decision-making on complaints lodged against officers.
The commission received more than 2,100 complaints about Queensland police officers between July 1, 2025, and the end of March 2026. In 2022, Judge Deborah Richards recommended replacing the existing conduct complaints system with a dedicated integrity unit after an inquiry into police responses to domestic and family violence calls.
Richards set an 18-month deadline for the unit. Barbour noted that 42 months have passed since the recommendation.
Barbour said both the police service and the police union agree the change is needed and that responsibility for implementation rests with the government. He described the delay as somewhat frustrating. Deputy premier Jarrod Bleijie said the current government has been in office for the past year and a half and is working to establish the unit.
He stated that a resolution is expected in the future.
