QuEra aims to deliver Libra, a fault-tolerant system with 256 logical qubits, through AWS cloud access in 2028. The machine is projected to run one million operations at low error rates. @NewScientist reported the timeline and technical targets.
news.sky.comQuEra plans to deliver a fault-tolerant quantum computer named Libra in 2028. @NewScientist reported that the system will be offered to users through the cloud via a collaboration with Amazon Web Services. Libra will contain between 10,000 and 15,000 physical qubits partitioned into 256 logical qubits.
Each logical qubit is projected to commit an error only once in a million operations, enabling the machine to run a megaquop of one million operations. The largest array of neutral atom qubits built so far contains 6,100 qubits, while the largest number of error-corrected logical qubits demonstrated is 48.
QuEra is currently operating five experimental machines to develop aspects of Libra, including replacing atoms that become faulty by getting warm and managing the power of the large number of lasers needed.
QuEra's qubits will be made from extremely cold, electrically neutral atoms controlled with lasers. The firm is also collaborating with AWS on integrating Libra into conventional cloud infrastructure. Yuval Boger, a researcher at QuEra, said having the first fault-tolerant quantum computer will be like breaking the sound barrier.
IBM predicts it will offer fault-tolerant quantum computers starting in 2029.
