Radiologist Salaries Reach $571,000 Amid Growing Demand Despite Past AI Replacement Predictions

A decade after predictions that AI would replace radiologists, the profession has seen growth in numbers and salaries. Demand for radiologists remains high due to increased healthcare needs and regulatory requirements. Experts note that AI tools are augmenting rather than eliminating radiology jobs.

In 2016, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the 'Godfather of AI,' predicted at a machine learning conference in Toronto that AI would soon outperform humans in radiology tasks. He suggested stopping the training of new radiologists, stating it was obvious that AI would handle image analysis better within five to 10 years.

Hinton compared radiologists to a coyote already over a cliff but not yet looking down. However, last year, he clarified to the New York Times that his prediction focused solely on image analysis, and he now believes human radiologists will collaborate with AI for improved efficiency.

Over the past decade, the number of active radiologists in the United States has increased by about 10%, according to an economist and business administration professor at the University of Virginia who studies healthcare finance and physician labor markets.

This growth contrasts with earlier predictions of job displacement, as the U.S. faces a shortage of radiologists. Demand for healthcare services has risen due to an aging population and expanded insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act. io, a job board for the profession.

The average salary for radiologists reached $571,000 in 2025, marking a 9% increase from the previous year, according to a Medscape study. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated on the Dwarkesh Podcast last month that predictions of radiology's demise often overlook the full scope of the job beyond scan reading.

Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings said on the Possible podcast late last month that radiology demonstrates how AI may affect jobs without fully replacing them. He noted that scenarios of AI wiping out professions have not materialized in this field.

Regulatory factors contribute to the persistence of human radiologists, as Medicare and Medicaid reimburse only for studies with a final read by a licensed physician. Accountability for missed diagnoses also remains unclear for AI systems. Radiologists perform tasks beyond image reading, including consulting with physicians, monitoring patients, and conducting procedures.

An economist argued that automating some tasks allows doctors to focus more on others, similar to how spreadsheet software shifted accountants toward advisory roles in the 1990s. Dr. Jeff Chang, a former emergency room radiologist and cofounder of RadAI, told Fortune that AI tools save radiologists time on report generation without replacing the profession.

His company’s products aim to reduce burnout by automating parts of the workflow. Between 2018 and early 2025, radiology case loads increased by 25%, according to the Journal of the American College of Radiology. FDA-approved AI tools have made imaging faster and cheaper, contributing to higher demand for scans.

A Texas-based interventional radiologist stated that AI cannot replicate human elements like empathy or physical comfort for patients. Concerns exist that AI hype might deter medical students from pursuing radiology, potentially exacerbating shortages.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs within five years. Some companies, such as Snap and Block, have cited AI as a factor in recent layoffs. An economist suggested that most jobs remain safe in the medium term unless AI achieves artificial general intelligence.

The radiology example illustrates how technology can enhance rather than destroy professions.
