Rangers Sign Injured Third-Round Pick Brody Bumila to $2.75 Million Contract
Texas Rangers third-round draft pick Brody Bumila said Tuesday he will need Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. The 18-year-old, who throws his fastball over 100 mph, signed a $2.75 million deal the same day.

Brody Bumila said Tuesday he will need Tommy John surgery to repair damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow after the Texas Rangers selected the 18-year-old right-hander 89th overall out of Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Massachusetts.
The right-hander, who regularly throws his fastball above 100 mph, is expected to miss the remainder of 2026 and all of 2027, with a return to the mound possible no earlier than late 2027. The Rangers announced the same day that they signed him to a $2.75 million contract.
Bumila underwent internal-brace surgery on the same ligament in 2025 and informed MLB teams before the draft that further damage would require another procedure. In his senior season he went 6-0 with a 1.10 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 44⅓ innings.
The Rangers also signed left-hander Gio Rojas, the No. 16 pick, for $4.6 million and infielder Connor Comeau, the No. 54 pick, for $2.5 million. "I just think you've got to just keep going, not stop. If you think you can achieve your goal, you can achieve it," Bumila told WBZ-TV in Boston last week.
"College would be amazing to go to, but every kid's dream is to be a professional baseball player not a college baseball player," he added.
