Real Madrid Targets Free-Agent Defender and Right Back

Real Madrid has identified two defensive additions ahead of the 2026-27 season. The club intends to sign Liverpool center back Ibrahima Konaté after his contract expires and to complete the transfer of Inter Milan right back Denzel Dumfries for approximately €20 million.

The center-back position requires reinforcement. Éder Militão remains sidelined by recurring injuries, while David Alaba has left the club. Rüdiger agreed to a one-year contract extension at age 33, and academy product Raúl Asensio, 23, has yet to establish a regular role.

Right-back addition Denzel Dumfries is expected to replace departing captain Dani Carvajal. The Netherlands international will provide an aerial presence and box threat that differs from the profile of the club's other right back, who appeared in 21 league matches last season.

Further plans Sources told ESPN that Madrid will continue summer activity with at least one additional midfielder and another center back. Targets mentioned include Chelsea's Enzo Fernández, West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes, and Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, while Manchester City's Rúben Dias has also been discussed.

The club has explored an attacking option, placing a publicized €150 million offer for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez and holding contact with representatives of Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise. Real Madrid has denied reports of the Olise discussions.

Contract situations will shape the remainder of the window. Officials aim to terminate Dani Ceballos' deal one year early, though terms have not been agreed. The status of young forward Gonzalo García remains uncertain, and Brazil winger Vinícius Júnior has a contract that runs until 2027.
