Tanner Bibee left the Cleveland mound with a lead for the first time in 13 starts on May 31, but the Boston Red Sox scored six runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Guardians 9-4 at home. Bibee is now 0-7 and is the first pitcher in Cleveland's 125-year franchise history to go winless in his first 13 starts.

He is also the 12th opening day starter since 1976 to make at least 10 starts without earning a win before June, according to Sportradar data.

He has the most starts without a win before June among those pitchers and is the fourth with at least 12 such starts. The previous three opening day starters since 1976 with at least 12 starts and no wins before June were Kyle Freeland of Colorado in 2025, José Ureña of Miami in 2018, and Carl Morton of Atlanta in 1976.

Bibee's seven losses are tied for the second most among the 12 opening day starters since 1976 who made at least 10 starts without a win before June.

Jarren Duran hit a leadoff home run on the fifth pitch of the game, the fourth time Bibee has allowed a leadoff homer this season. Bibee allowed only one hit from the second through the fourth innings before the Red Sox loaded the bases with one out in the fifth.

Mickey Gasper hit a sacrifice fly that drove in Marcelo Mayer to tie the game at 2-2, and Wilyer Abreu followed with an RBI single that gave Boston a 3-2 lead.

Cleveland responded in the bottom of the fifth when José Ramírez hit an RBI double after Boston left fielder Masataka Yoshida lost track of the fly ball in the sun, and Chase DeLauter drove in Ramírez with a single. The Guardians loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth, but Stuart Fairchild struck out and unsuccessfully challenged the called third strike, leaving Cleveland without a challenge for the rest of the game.

Bibee retired the Red Sox in order in the sixth inning.

Bibee threw 90 pitches, including 62 strikes, allowed three runs and six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. "I don't have any control over it. All I can do is go out there, try to throw up some zeros and whatever happens, happens," Bibee said.

Catcher Austin Hedges said wins and losses are not a meaningful statistic for starting pitchers. "Wins and losses don't matter for starting pitchers. It's not a stat that means anything. So I know he's not worried about it and we're definitely not worried about it," Hedges said.
