Reform UK Leader Faces Questions Over Home Purchase Funding
Reform UK said its leader used a television appearance fee to buy a home in Surrey without a mortgage. The party denied the purchase involved a £5m gift received weeks earlier from a donor.
thehindu.comReform UK leader Nigel Farage is facing questions over how he funded the purchase of a £1.4m home in Surrey. The party stated that Farage used a fee from appearing on the ITV series I'm A Celebrity to complete the cash purchase in May 2024. Land registry documents show the transaction took place on 10 May 2024 without a mortgage.
A spokesperson for Farage said anti-money laundering checks for the property occurred in March 2024, before the £5m gift was received.
Background on the Gift The £5m payment came from British businessman Christopher Harborne on 5 April 2024. Reform UK has described the transfer as a personal gift given in recognition of Farage's past work on Brexit. Harborne later became the party's largest donor and contributed an additional £12m in 2025. Farage has said the original payment was intended to cover lifetime security costs.
The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner has opened an inquiry into whether Farage should have declared the payment under Commons rules. Farage told The Sun that the money was a reward for Brexit campaigning and that he is not concerned about the review.
Labour chair Anna Turley called for Farage to provide evidence supporting his account of the funding sources. Reform UK maintains that the gift did not require disclosure because it was unconditional and personal.
