Rep. Kat Cammack Introduces Resolution for House Staff Background Checks

Rep. Kat Cammack introduced a resolution to amend House rules and mandate background checks for all congressional staffers, Washington Examiner reported. The measure would also require staffers to disclose any dual citizenship or prior employment with foreign governments.

Cammack stated there is “absolutely” foreign interference on Capitol Hill. She described staff travel abroad paid for by foreign governments as a “target-rich environment” for investigation and noted that the issue spans both parties and both chambers.

Staffers currently handle sensitive data such as Social Security numbers in casework files and veterans’ records without background checks, while executive branch federal employees undergo them, Washington Examiner reported.

Cammack said she has presented the resolution to leadership several times and received agreement that it is a good idea, yet she observed zero urgency to advance it. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna called for the resolution to reach the floor immediately.

The proposal requires only a simple majority vote for enactment. Luna posted on X that declassified files expected in coming weeks would detail a former member of Congress placing interns who served as agents of foreign governments. Cammack added that the disclosure requirements for dual citizenship and ties to foreign-funded organizations drew the most pushback.

She said the resolution sets a universal transparency standard rather than targeting any single nation.
