Retail Association Calls for EU Exemption on AI-Generated Ads

A European retail association has urged officials to exempt AI-generated advertisements from upcoming EU transparency rules on digital ads. The group stated that applying the same disclosure standards to machine-generated content would create unnecessary compliance costs for retailers without improving consumer information.

Under the EU's existing framework, advertisers must identify paid promotions and disclose certain targeting practices. The association argued that AI-generated ads do not involve the same payment or targeting mechanisms that the rules were designed to address. Officials have not yet indicated whether they will grant the requested exemption before the rules take effect.

Retailers said the added requirements could slow adoption of AI tools that automate ad creation for small businesses. The association did not provide specific cost estimates or examples of affected campaigns.
