Retatrutide Shows Strong Blood-Sugar and Weight-Loss Benefits in Diabetes Trial With Limited Cardiac Events
New safety figures from Eli Lilly’s TRANSCEND-T2D-1 study were released Saturday at the American Diabetes Association meeting and published in the Lancet.
cnbc.comResearchers presented new safety and tolerability data on Eli Lilly’s next-generation obesity drug retatrutide on Saturday. The figures came from the late-stage TRANSCEND-T2D-1 study and were published simultaneously in the Lancet. Seven of the 403 participants who received retatrutide experienced arrhythmias, defined as irregular heartbeats.
Three treated participants also experienced major cardiovascular complications, while none occurred in the placebo group. Eli Lilly had previously reported that retatrutide lowered blood sugar and produced significant weight loss in people with diabetes. The company noted that patients with diabetes typically lose less weight on such treatments than those without the condition.
The number of cardiac events recorded was too small to draw meaningful conclusions, experts said. The data were presented at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association.
