nypost.comThe Colorado Rockies scored a franchise-record 23 runs and defeated the Athletics 23-9 on Sunday at Las Vegas Ballpark. The Rockies collected 24 hits and hit six home runs in the game. Willi Castro finished with seven RBIs and four hits, including a grand slam off Scott Barlow in the eighth inning.
Hunter Goodman recorded a career-high five hits and drove in four runs. Castro and Goodman each hit two home runs. Troy Johnston and TJ Rumfield also homered for Colorado. Kyle Karros added four hits.
The Rockies ended a three-game losing streak and improved to 27-45. Tomoyuki Sugano earned the win despite allowing eight runs and nine hits in five innings. Eiberson Castellano pitched three scoreless innings for the save in his major-league debut.
Max Muncy and Tyler Soderstrom homered for the Athletics, who fell to 35-36. Lawrence Butler had three hits, and Zack Gelof extended his hitting streak to 18 games. The game was played in 101-degree heat.
"You've just got to make contact and the ball's going to go," Goodman said. "This is a very, very tough environment to play baseball," Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said. "As you saw, obviously the ball flies in the thin air, the heat and the sun.
Goodman said he would reserve judgment on how major-league baseball would play in the Athletics' planned enclosed stadium on The Strip, scheduled to open after the team moves to Las Vegas in 2028. "I'll be curious to see how it plays," he said. "With it being indoors, I don't know if it will play the same or not.
The Athletics had won four straight entering the game. The teams combined for 102 runs during a six-game stretch that began with a 15-14, 12-inning contest between Milwaukee and the Athletics last Monday.
