Romanian Rescue Team Finds No Clues in Latest Search for Missing British Teen

A recent search for British teenager George Smyth, who disappeared while hiking in Romania's Bucegi Mountains, produced no new clues, though rescuers plan to resume operations in still-snowy sections once conditions allow. Smyth, 18, vanished on Nov. 23, 2025, during a solo hike toward Bran Castle in Transylvania.

The castle is known as the home of the fictional Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel. His last known location was described as a very isolated and hard-to-access mountain area. Smyth had left his accommodation at the University of Bristol in southwest England without informing his family.

He placed a distressing call to Romanian emergency services shortly before disappearing, telling operators he was exhausted, hypothermic and unsure of his location, his mother previously told the Times of London. Local mountain rescue service Salvamont Brasov launched a fresh operation after snow covering the mountains melted enough to reach previously inaccessible ground.

A spokesperson for the service stated that the effort yielded no results.

"Unfortunately, as a result of the operation, no clues or elements were identified that would lead to finding the missing young man," the spokesperson said, according to nypost.com reporting. Two or three narrow stretches of the mountains still hold snow. The search is expected to resume in those areas in the coming weeks once the snow melts, the rescue team said.

A public appeal asked hikers and visitors to watch for objects, tracks or other elements that could help identify the area where Smyth may be. In January, Smyth's family said they had come to accept that he had died. "When the mountains that took him are ready to let go, George will be found, and we will bring him home to say goodbye," they stated at the time.
