The competitions occurred on drifting sea ice, with participants arriving from Norway aboard the French polar vessel Le Commandant Charcot. Runners disembarked the ship to complete laps of a 1,055-metre loop on the ice.
They were required to wear thermal gear and life vests throughout the event. Denmark's Rikke Dam won the women's title in 6:54:02. Wang Shengxian of China won the men's race in 3:52:22. Organisers described the races as the world's coolest marathon.
