Rupert Lowe described the 1996 Dunblane school shooting as "one murder" during an appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast on 9 July 2026. " When host Joe Rogan clarified that the ban resulted from "one murder," Lowe repeated the characterisation. On 13 March 1996, gunman Thomas Hamilton entered the gym hall at Dunblane Primary School and killed 16 children and their teacher Gwen Mayor.
Hamilton carried four legally owned handguns and 743 rounds of ammunition. The attack lasted less than four minutes, injuring another 12 children and three adults before Hamilton turned a gun on himself. All but two of the children shot were aged five or six.
Lowe said his father's pistols had been taken away after the shooting. He founded Restore Britain after his suspension from Reform UK in March 2025 over allegations that he made threats of physical violence against then party chairman Zia Yusuf. The Crown Prosecution Service later stated there was insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction.
Kenny Ross, whose daughter Joanna was killed in the attack, said the comments reflected ignorance of how devastating the event had been. "They don't realise how devastating it was. But now we have a safer society because there is no longer private gun ownership," Ross stated.
A Restore Britain spokesperson said Lowe was clearly referring to one incident.
